Before we precede to the download guidelines coming up in the next post by Mymobnet! Blog, we shall quickly look at what Skype is for those who want to learn more about the technology.

What is Skype?

A lot of people have wondered what Skype really means because it is a bit strange in many countries of the world. Anyway, I have been using Skype on my Windows Mobile phone since 2007 so it isn’t new to some old users.

Skype is an internet technology that allows users to make communications over the internet either by voice using the microphone or video using the system webcam and also instant messaging. Now you are beginning to see how useful Skype can be. Skype is presently developed and managed by Skype technologies and Microsoft Corporation.

History of Skype:

Skype was originally developed by 5 programmers and first released in 2003. The original developers are: Estonian developers Ahti Heinla, Priit Kasesalu, and Jaan Tallinn, Danish Janus Friis, and Swedish Niklas Zennström.

Skype grew to a total number of $663 Million users before being later acquired in 2011 by Microsoft at $8.5 billion –a development I watched closely with mixed feelings if the service would continue to be as free as it has always been.

Features of Skype:

Skype is a Voice over the Internet Protocol software (VoIP). Its registered users can make live video calls, voice calls and instant messaging.
